B oulder County is located in the state of Colorado, and encompasses an area of 742 square miles along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The current population for this beautiful county is 291,000 residents. The population is generally scattered between nine small towns and three large cities, with the largest being Boulder. Boulder has a current population of nearly 95,000 residents. The second largest city in the county is Broomfield, with a modest population of 38,000. These two cities alone make up over one third of Boulder County's population. For this reason, Boulder County has an overall "low population density" in comparison to national averages. Most of the towns in the county have less than 5,000 residents. Boulder County is known for its open mountainous scenery, friendly people, and love of anything wild and fun. Boulder County is an adventure lover's paradise. There is outstanding winter skiing with many resorts in the general area including The Eldora Ski Resort. There are also many camping and hiking trails open during the summer months. The Rocky Mountain National Park is located in the County as well as Boulder Mountain Park. Not to mention the easy and quick access to all of the recreational adventures that await discovery within the entire Rocky Mountains.
The economy in the county has generally been very strong with its main employers being in the manufacturing and retail trades. In recent years technology has made a major presence in the city of Boulder, and nearby Denver. Boulder is also known as a college town with The University of Colorado at Boulder located there. The University is also a major employer in the area. According to the national census, Boulder County's average household income is $65,000 annually. Houses average $100,000 in the smaller towns, to an average of $305,000 in Boulder. There is a very good range of housing available through out the county, much of which has great views and open spaces. Boulder County was one of the first counties to establish planned community green belts in an effort to control over building and population densities.
Boulder County is one of the safest counties in the nation to live. The crime rate is very low, well beneath the national average. The county is also below the national unemployment rate by almost one percent. Another interesting statistic about Boulder County, is over 35% of its population in between the ages of 25 and 40. Overall Boulder County is becoming one of the more sought after relocation destinations. The county has an excellent community feel with affordable housing, good economy and a low crime rate. Boulder County has beautiful mountains, quaint towns and big cities, all without detracting from its natural splendor.
